Hopefully by now, you’ve seen the viral video of, Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows, breaking down cultural appropriation in society and hip-hop. The points made throughout the video are extremely strong and put a lot of things that may go unnoticed in entertainment and pop culture into perspective. Hairstyles, fashion trends and even historical/cultural references being made fun of are just a few that this video highlights.
As the insightful and eye opening video concludes, viewers are posed with a thought provoking question “What would America be like, if we loved black people as much as we loved black culture?” The sad reality is that we’ll probably never know, but IF in a world and/or time where African Americans are loved as much as their culture, how would life differ? We can [all] probably assume that there wouldn’t be so much racial tension and judgement in entertainment. We can also assume that terms like “culture vulture” and “Lifestyle Pirate”, when speaking of other races taking on African American culture as there own, wouldn’t exist.
Again, in this lifetime we’ll probably never know, but after really analyzing that question it really has us here at Hip Hop My Way thinking, what if? So we want to ask you, our readers, that same question- What Would America be like, if we loved black people as much as we loved black culture?
