Hip Hop group Public Enemy who were the self-proclaimed “Prophets of Rage” released their classic Black empowerment song “Fight The Power” in 1989. The song served as the musical theme for Spike Lee’s 1989 film Do The Right Thing. In the video, Public Enemy’s leading members Chuck D and Flavor Flav gathered an army of people and marched through the streets of Brooklyn while protesting African-American rights.

Fight the Power reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles as well as number one on the Hot R&B Singles. The song was also named the best single of 1989 by Village Voice. “Fight The Power” is still considered to be Public Enemy’s most popular song in their catalogue. Public Enemy is gearing up to release their new album Man Plans God Laughs on July 14th via SPIT digital.
