Hip hop lost an integral figure in the genre when it was revealed that Phife Dawg — the lyrical crusader of the illustrious group A Tribe Called Quest — died at the age of 45 early Wednesday morning. Laced with wittiness and zeal within his raps, Phife helped forge a lane with his group and pioneered an era that asked for nothing more than pure hip hop. His contributions stem from his infectious verse on “Electric Relaxation” when he rapped, “I like ’em brown, yellow, Puerto Rican or Haitian / Name is Phife Dawg from the Zulu Nation.” Many artists chimed in on social media to pay their respects to one of the founding fathers on hip hop.
