Common has years in the game and wants to give some of his knowledge to today’s up-and-coming musicians. The Chicago veteran recently gave some advice to the 2015 XXL Freshman Class. Common expressed how he feels about today’s music industry and how it’s harder for today’s upcoming artists to get noticed in this new digital era due to the large amount of music being created and promoted on the internet everyday.

Common told the 2015 XXL Freshmen Class to be courageous, try different things, and be unique. He also suggested that they know their hip hop history as Common praised the younger hip hop artists rappers J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar for being well informed on all the great rappers that came before them. Read Common’s full speech here.
