Phil Jackson is now the New York Knicks team President.

It’s true!

Jackson signed a 5-year $60 million contract as the President of the New York Knicks on March 18th.  This is great news for people who appreciated Jackson’s triangle offense and the success he had with the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers.  Many fans were as sorry to see him leave the game after the end of the 2010–11 season as they were seeing MJ leave the sport.  Even though Jackson isn’t returning in a coaching capacity, having his name associated with the game again makes more than a few fans happy.

Phil Jackson has his work cut out for him.  The Knicks have under performed in recent years, even with Carmelo Anthony at the helm.  Speaking of Anthony, he is a free agent, which means that Jackson has to make a decision about what he wants to do in that regard.  Jackson and the team’s star forward will discuss the roadmap before any decisions are made.

Jackson is also walking into the potential situation of having to find a coach and being over salary cap without a way to fix it until the 2014-2015 season.  That gives him no wiggle room to reshape his roster in the short term.

But that’s all right.  This is Phil Jackson we’re talking about here.  If anyone can make a change in a franchise, it’s the Zen Master himself.
