It was the summer of 2013 and Kendrick Lamar had just released his debut album Good Kid, M.A.D.D City which was causing a lot of buzz in the hip hop world and already being called a classic. To add more fuel to the fire, the Compton MC released a controversial new verse for Big Sean’s “Control” song calling out all the top rappers in the industry including Drake, J. Cole, JAY Z, and others.

Kendrick Lamar claimed to be one of the best emcees next to Biggie, Jay Z and Nas. K. Dot even went as far as calling himself the king of New York. Many New York hip hop fans in addition to west coast hip hop fans spoke up about the “Control” verse calling New York’s top rappers soft for not coming back with a strong response record to Kendrick’s hard “Control” verse.
