15 Minutes of Fame: Guerrilla Black

In 2004, Compton’s Guerrila Black set the whole world in shock, and had many feeling mixed emotions of joy and pain. The rapper was in the national spotlight due to his Guerrilla City debut album. The freshman featured two dope singles, the first single “Compton” featured Beanie Man and “You’re The One” featuring Mario Winans.

While you can credit his short termed success to his two radio friendly records, you’d be stupid to not believe nostalgia didn’t play a role either. Let’s be honest, Guerilla Black sounded very similar to the late great Notorious B.I.G. Everything about the Compton rapper drew inspiration from Biggie Smalls, from his tone and delivery to his stylish look.

Despite sounding like B.I.G., both “You’re The One” & “Compton” experienced mediocre success on the Billboard charts. It turns out Guerrilla Black needed to find other means of living, as the rapper was busted for credit card fraud in 2012, nearly a decade after his short lived run with hip hop relevance. The Compton MC is in the midst of a 10 year prison bid and will be on five years supervision following his release.
