Yo! MTV Raps Debuted Today (8/6) In 1988

Yo! MTV Raps made its television debut 27 years ago today. On August 6th, 1988 hip hop was given its first show on MTV, which at the time was monumental considering the platform rarely played any of our culture’s music. In retrospect, it’s crazy to think hip hop would have the powerful influence it has now without the emergence of the innovative program.

The first episode aired on a Saturday and was hosted by RUN-D.M.C. and featured a Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff. The successful pilot led to network picking up the show, and the rest is history as Yo MTV Raps! made history up until the show ended in 1998.
