In what is being considered the largest heroin bust in NYC history, NYC’s DEA uncovered 154 lbs of heroin at a street value of $50 M from a vehicle’s secret compartment after a year-long investigation. The DEA were watching Jose A. Mercedes (aka “Hippie”) and Yenci Cruz Francisco before they apprehend them. DEA Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan said in a press release:
The $50 million street value of the heroin in this case is a conservative estimate. To put it in perspective, this load was so large it carried the potential of supplying a dose of heroin to every man, woman and child in New York City.
Straight up: now we understand what you gotta do when then block severely drys up, but we’re also glad to know that the seize happened before this potent drug hit the streets, bringing NYC back to its drug infested days between the ’60s and ’90s.
