In the case of someone like Big Sean, his breakup with Naya Rivera, and later Ariana Grande, was the best thing for the rapper. Not only did he make a hit song about his breakup, “I Don’t F*ck With You,” but his album went on to be one of the biggest of the year. Some of the hip hop community was ruling Sean out as a serious MC, but once he channeled all of those potential breakup aftermath feelings into his craft, he landed at the top of people’s lists this year.
