New York City DJ Funkmaster Flex is opening a retail store that will sell all things hip hop. The store will have a physical location in New York City, which is being kept under wraps until July 4 when it will first open its doors. In addition, the store, titled #PlanetKixx, will be available for online shoppers via both a website and mobile app.
Funkmaster Flex aka Aston George Taylor, Jr. got his start with Hot 97, a radio station in New York City. His radio show was the first ever rap specific show in New York. Additionally, in 1995 the Flip Squad came to be, which featured the most notable DJs in NYC. Funkmaster Flex joined ranks to the group along with Mark Ronson, Biz Markie, Cipha Sounds, Mister Cee, DJ Enuff, Frankie Cutlass, “BounceMasta” Doo Wop, DJ Riz and Big Kap. Note that you can expect the top names in the hip hop fashion and sneaker industry to be involved in Funk’s latest endeavor.
The addition of the retail and online stores to Funkmaster Flex is part of his natural progression as an artist. This comes in light of the ever growing empires of hip hop DJs and performers, such as Kanye West and Russell Simmons, in the fashion industry. Take the $16 million winning Ebay bid of Kanye’s Nike Air Jeezy 2 aka Red October. Clearly, Funkmaster Flex is in the right business with #PlanetKixx!
#PlanetKixx shoppers will be able to score the freshest items from blinged out kicks to fashion forward hip hop ensembles. Brands to find at #PlanetKixx include G-Shock, New Era, Technics, Beats by Dre and Starter. Funkmaster Flex notes that he is “very excited to bring all things I’m passionate about and be able to get exclusively to the masses.”
Hot 97, the radio station where Funmaster Flex has mixed on his own show since 1992, showed its support recently. Several of the biggest names of New York City’s hip hop DJ community called in to the nationally aired syndication to congratulate Funkmaster Flex on his latest achievement. Russell Simmons, himself a hip hop sneaker and fashion mogul, along with Diddy, Fab, Wale and Fat Joe have rallied behind Funkmaster Flex and #PlanetKixx.
If you are interested in the grand opening celebration of #PlanetKixx on Independence Day, note the launch party will be hosted by Nigel Sylvester, Wale, Fat Joe and Fabolous. DJ Clark Kent and his music catalog will keep attendees bouncing. Of course, Funkmaster Flex will be at the event where he is set to unveil his own collection of sneakers, which you’ll be able to buy at #PlanetKixx along with other top names in the biz.
