Earlier this week, hip hop pioneer, DJ Big Kap passed away. The legendary DJ was instrumental in ushering new music from New York through his 1999 collaboration with DJ FunkMaster Flex The Tunnel. The album featured a myriad of rap heavyweights ranging from the likes of Jay Z, Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G, Lil Kim, and more. On Wednesday (Feb. 3), Funk Flex broke the news of Kap’s passing on his Instagram.

Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg wrote the following on his Instagram: “Woke up to terrible news today … We lost Big Kap,” he said. “Not only a great DJ, key part of the flip squad and big dog pit bulls , and incredible talker with a unique and awesome voice but more than anything — great guy …always good for a warm smile and a sincere conversation… Was always very fond of this guy ever since I met him .. RIP brother… Sending love and positive vibes to his family, @funkflex , @ciphasoundsand all the pit bulls and flip squad.” Industry veteran and HHMW’s Manager, Yvette Davilla, also expressed her disbelief for Kap’s passing, as well. “Big Kap made a huge impression on me, both as a young music executive but also as a lover of Hip Hop. He was a gentle giant but a force in our culture. I hope we always remember Kap and all he did for Hip Hop”
