The highly coveted Superbowl Halftime show’s history has showcased some of the biggest artists on the planet. From superstar siblings Michael and Janet Jackson, to Madonna, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and countless others. Until now, pop stars have been practically running the show. But for the first time in it’s 56 year history, the halftime show was headlined by today’s top Hip Hop artist. Can you believe it? We can.
California Love
With four of the five artists on the bill being California natives, Los Angeles was the perfect setting for this year’s show. The stage resembled a real life metaverse backdrop atop a map of California. To call the show a success would be quite the understatement.
Snoop Dogg set it off with his signature blue bandana print sweatsuit. Soon after, the beat for “The Next Episode” dropped, and the SoFi Stadium didn’t stop rocking from that point forward.
There were also many surprises during the star studded performance. As HHMW predicted, rapper 50 Cent dropped out of the sky seemingly out of no where to perform his monster hit “In Da Club”, produced by none other than Dr. Dre. Meanwhile, singer Anderson.Paak was also spotted next to his mentor Dr. Dre effortlessly killing his signature drumset that bears his name. Although this wasn’t Mary J Blige’s first go round at the halftime show, it was definitely her biggest look as she performed two songs.
Hip Hop won the Superbowl!
Overall, the Superbowl halftime show was a mixture of fun, great music, great dancing with a splash of social commentary. Eminem took a knee to remind viewers there are still some social issues that need to be addressed. Kendrick Lamar also came out swinging as he segued perfectly into his 2015 hit, “Alright”, receiving many positive reactions from the sold out crowd.
If this year’s show was any indication of the power of Hip Hop music, it’s safe to say this genre, which was once considered a fad, is here to stay.
