One social worker, J.C. Hall who works at Mott Haven Community High School in the Bronx managed to keep students busy and in school even after dismissal, while at the same time raising daily attendance. How? By coaching them through writing rhymes, voicing them, recording and mixing music and then sharing their stories with their peers. Hall’s after-school “program” had such a positive effect on student behavior, attendance and academics, that the school’s principal, Helene Spadaccini, funded money in her school budget this year to create a recording studio.
