Drake release the official visuals to his “Hotline Bling” single last night, and while the Internet is in a frenzy over the memes and joke videos, many are bringing up an unfinished argument regarding the song being similar to D.R.A.M.’s popular “Cha Cha” track. Ever since Drizzy released “Hotline Bling,” it seems as though the Virginia native’s hit record became a quick thing of the past. Radios have stopped actively playing it, which has quickly been replaced by “Hotline Bling,” and the two do seem to have a very similar beat behind them. Many are accusing Drake of biting off the song, and taking away the success that D.R.A.M. was originally building up to with “Cha Cha.” Another point that needs to be noted is that Drake hopped on the remix to “Cha Cha” before “Hotline Bling” was released to the public.

He even admitted in his FADER interview that he was inspired from the song, comparing it to how Jamaican artists all hop on the same riddim when one is released. Although there may have been some considerable biting from Drizzy, this is certainly not the first time a track has been inspired from a previous one, and one that was a hit record at that. With his power in music these days, it’s hard for any rapper or artist to compete with Drake, even if the record is better talent or creativity-wise. He has made a killing off of co-signing artists and hopping on the remixes to popular songs, but fans can be hopeful that it is only inspiring him and his creative juices, rather than him using it as a permanent crutch for a possible road block. D.R.A.M.’s “Cha Cha” does have quite the similar tone to Drizzy’s “Hotline Bling,” but the two should be able to co-exist in a world where Beyonce is made happy when she hears the former. All we can hope is that D.R.A.M. will come back with a vengeance, releasing an epic follow-up to his original “Cha Cha” single.
