Today commemorates the 14 year anniversary of Aaliyah’s passing. The singer who was born Aaliyah Dana Haughton was a native of Brooklyn, New York and moved to Detroit, Michigan when she was a young girl. As a young lady growing up in Detroit, Aaliyah knew she wanted to have a career in the entertainment industry. At twelve years old Aaliyah’s dream came true when her uncle Barry Hankerson who ran his own imprint label Blackground Records signed Aaliyah to his label. It was Barry Hankerson who introduced Aaliyah to her mentor R. Kelly. Later on, allegations of Aaliyah and R. Kelly being married would make news headlines but were never officially confirmed by Aaliyah or R. Kelly.

On August 25th, 2001 when Aaliyah was coming into her own as a phenomenal singer and actress, her life was cut short in the Bahamas while filming the video for her song “Rock The Boat.” The plane that Aaliyah and eight other passengers boarded to head back to the states crashed ending all of the nine passengers’ lives and ending Aaliyah’s promising future in the entertainment industry. Today, Aaliyah’s influence in popular and R&B music is still prevalent and her music is still considered classic. Rest In Peace “Baby Girl.”
