Floyd Mayweather Jr. (47-0) defeated Marcos Maidana (35-5) in a rematch that further proved that Mayweather is truly one of the best fighters in the world. In a unanimous decision, two judges scored the bout 116-11 and the other 115-112. Mayweather landed more than half of his punches and danced around Maidana for 12 rounds of dominance. When they both faced-off back in May, Maidana came after Mayweather with all that he had and landed more punches on Mayweather than any other opponent in Mayweather’s career.

The result was a split decision loss for Maidana. This time, Maidana had to switch things up and come into the ring with a new strategy. However, no one figured his performance this time around would be so lackluster and flat. Mayweather rarely grants rematches to his opponents. But after the close fight in May, Mayweather wanted to not only give the fans a good show, but prove to the skeptics that he is truly the better fighter. And he proved it Saturday night (Sept 13). Other than a dominating performance by Mayweather, boxing fans (who paid the steep cost to watch the fight on PPV) got to see something that most don’t. In the eighth round while the fighters were tangled together in the center of the ring, Maidana bit Mayweather’s fingers. And he must have bit them hard to get through both his mouthpiece and Mayweather’s boxing gloves. Causing a break during the match, Mayweather was complaining to the referee about the assault. It made for quite a bizarre moment.

After the fight Mayweather said:

”Something happened and then my fingers were numb. After the eighth round my fingers were numb,” said Mayweather after the fight. “I could only use my other hand. He bit me. I realized he bit me.”

In his defense, after denying the bite, Maidana claimed that Mayweather had him in a headlock and was purposely rubbing his gloves in his face. All biting aside, only one thing is on boxing fans’ minds. Who will Mayweather fight next. Really, there is only one fight that anybody wants to see. Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. Fight fans have been wanting to see this match-up for years. With issues between Mayweather and Pacquiao’s promoter, the purse split, and drug testing, the fight has been hard to come to an agreement. Pacquiao is considered to be the toughest match-up for Mayweather and has a huge fan base. This would make for a huge payday for both fighters as well. Mayweather is considered one of the best fighters of all-time. If he wants to truly be considered one of the best and keep his reputation intact, he needs to make this match happen.
