The controversy behind white rap listeners who don’t support the movement
[above4]
Although the Black Lives Matter movement has become prevalent in hip hop, it hasn’t necessarily been hitting with the white community who listens in a way they can understand. Although they may be at Kendrick Lamar concerts screaming “We gon’ be alright” with the rest of the diverse crowd, they may not understand what it means to “be alright” in the first place. White people have the privilege of listening to rap music without having to feel the hard-hitting pain and suffering that comes behind a lot of the conscious rhymes. White people may read it in a textbook, but they surely have not experienced what it’s like to not have their lives matter because of the color of their skin amongst a bigoted authoritative system. It’s not that they are necessarily racist, but with great music can come great responsibility, and white listeners should truly understand the rhymes that they are bragging about supporting.
