Unless you’ve been under a rock the past few weeks, you are certainly aware of this year superbowl’s Hip Hop fueled halftime show. The likes of Dr.Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar are all on the bill to tear down the legendary halftime show. One has to wonder how they will manage to sequence a set list with all of these massive superstars. Amongst these 5 artist, the plethora of hit records span for multiple decades. Moreover, the NFL has even agreed to give them more time than the usual 12-15 minutes artists get to perform. It is rumored the group will have about 18 minutes to pull off their performance.
Kendrick Lamar,34, the youngest of the group, as expected, has the youngest discography. Mary J Blige has 41 singles that has cracked Billboard’s Top 100. Eminem is sure to perform his Emmy Award winning song “Lose Yourself” from his 8 Mile Soundtrack. Snoop Dogg has a catalog as long as the Mississippi river. But with rapper/producer Dr. Dre seemingly being at the helm of it all, its hard to imagine him doing what may be the biggest performance of his career, without doing arguably the biggest hit of his career.
That “hit” would be none other than 50 Cent’s 2003 smash hit, “In Da Club”. Once 50 joined Eminem’s label, Shady Records, the world knew it would be inevitable for him to work with Em’s mentor. As a result, the two spawned the infectious hit that spent nine weeks at 9 on Billboards top 100. It’s hard to imagine Dr. Dre pulling off the biggest moment of his career without adding 50 Cent’s mega-smash.
Lastly, the word around town is people are anticipating the halftime show even more than the actual game. The fact that the younger generation will see true Hip Hop make it’s “official” debut to Super Bowl 56 is also an exciting event. Rapper/entrepreneur Jay Z has taken the reign as the guy who will tighten the bond be the NFL owners and it’s players. The NFL is reported to be 70% African American as far as players, but doesn’t claim an African American owner. Maybe Hip Hop invading the coveted Super Bowl halftime show is a step in the right direction. It’s time for some UNITY…. Biggest music moment of the YEAR!
