Tonight’s Oscars was one for the ages for many reasons. Not only are we seeing more and more people of color being celebrated at the award show, but Hip Hop is creeping in for the takeover. Questlove of the Hip Hop band, The Roots, took home his first Oscar for ……. He gave an emotional speech that personally moved any Hip Hop head in the building. However, another Hip Hop icon would steal the night.
While presenting an award, comedian Chris Rock was onstage telling jokes. However, he made the mistake of telling a joke about Jada Pinkett. Jada is the wife of Rapper/Actor legend, Will Smith. When Rock joked about looking forward to seeing Pinkett in the next G.I. Jane movie due to her buzz cut, Will didn’t quite find it funny. In fact, he walked onstage and slapped Chris Rock directly in face and strutted offstage with almost what resembled a smile. At first, the audience thought it might have been staged, until Will continued his tirade after sitting down.
Will Smith Smacks Earth Wind & Fire Out Of Chris Rock
“Keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth,” Will shouted. He shouted this not only once, but several times.
The night would’t end there for Will, he also won the best actor Oscar for King Richard, a feel-good sports drama in which he plays the father of tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams. He has previously been nominated twice for best actor: in 2002 for the boxing biopic “Ali” and in 2006 for “The Pursuit of Happyness.”
Without mentioning the incident that had just taken place with Chris Rock, Smith gave an impeccable speech while tearing up. “I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people. Tim and Trevor and Zack and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjanue and the entire cast and crew of ‘King Richard,’ Venus and Serena, the entire Williams family. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams.”
Wow, I though Chris Rock was from Brooklyn, he just stood there! WTF! Never thought I’d see the day where Will Smith smacks Chris Rock! Wow!
