Today is a sad day for fans of the critically acclaimed HBO show, The Wire. Notorious drug lord, Melvin Williams — who served as the inspiration for the drug-laden show — died at the age of 73. Show creator, David Simon announced the death of Williams via Twitter.

According to Mashable, Simon followed Williams’ life and featured him as part of a five-part series he orchestrated in 1987. Afterwards, Simon pieced together the timeless show The Wire, which lasted from 2002-2008.
