Estee Lauder Exec Resigns Over Chingy Meme

It is not an ideal thing to make mistakes that cannot be amended. Moreover, one of the important principles of social media is to double check anything you post. You will surely be held responsible for it afterwards. It’s better to not hit send than to do so and regret it later as this has happened to Estée Lauder beauty senior executive, John Demsey.

John Demsey has been excused from his position after posting racist content. Such actions are considered inappropriate for him, and the company he represents. He took to his Instagram earlier last month (February 2022) to post a meme connected to the Chingy concert. As a result, this proved to for a cocktail of disaster.

The meme he posted sourced from a children’s book that featured a masked Big Bird discussing Mr. Snuffleupagus. The meme read, “My n-gga Snuffy done got the ‘rona at a Chingy concert.” John Demsey made the post on Instagram last week. He immediately deleted the post and issued an apology on Sunday for posting what he didn’t mean.

“I am terribly sorry and deeply ashamed that I hurt so many people when I made the horrible mistake of carelessly reposting a racist meme without reading it beforehand,” he wrote. “There are not enough words to express my remorse and sorrow,” Demsey wrote.

The screenshot of Demsey’s post has gone viral and he has received severe criticism for his actions. The New York Times reports that Demsey has been forced to exit his $10 Million a year job at the beauty company, and his retirement will take effect from March  4th. His apology and remorse kept him from being fired.

“This decision is the result of his recent Instagram posts, which do not reflect the values of The Estée Lauder Companies, have caused widespread offense, are damaging to our efforts to drive inclusivity both inside and outside our walls, and do not reflect the judgment we expect of our leaders,” a memo from the company read.

Chingy is now a trendy topic on Twitter. However, since he started trending, he hasn’t said anything about the situation but his fans have been speaking on his behalf.
